The following gives a brief job description for the position of “Animal Care Technician (ACT)”.
This job description describes the most common tasks in the operation. An ACT may not need to have any or all of the skills and experience when hired. The company will train in order to fulfill all of the described tasks.
ACT duties may include but are not limited to the following:
Working individually and with others in a team environment
Possess or willing to learn, develop and use animal husbandry skills.
Receives gilts when they arrive, present boar exposure, identify and record estrus cycles.
Heat checking, insemination and pregnancy checking. The ACT will breed gilts and sows by using artificial insemination, record breeding details on paper as well as computer records.
For computer recording the ACT will use a PigWIN, a Windows based computer management program, as well as Microsoft Excel and Word.
Feed animals according to established feeding program, check animal’s health and provide appropriate medication and health care.
Assist the sows when farrowing piglets, use appropriate early development care including health care and colostrum management.
Processing of piglets, including tattoo, castration, tail docking, administration of vaccinations, medications and mineral/vitamin supplementation.
Assist in preparing for export or domestic shipments and loading of piglets.
Assist in identifying and shipping cull animals.
Assist in minor repair and maintenance jobs.
MPL pays competitive wages plus a generous bonus program and excellent benefits.
Taken from the 2010 T4’s; MPL paid $39,132 on average per Technician for the year.

Job requirement
The succesful applicant needs to have a keen interest in working in the swine sector with a specific focus on high production performance and being able to do so as part of a team. There is no formal education requirement, however a High school level or equivalent is an asset.
